Foreword: (Un)Intentional Pedagogy

Most college teachers of my generation, and perhaps many since, were offered no formal instruction and little guidance about how to teach. From my vantage point, I think the assumption was that you have a bunch of really smart people in graduate school and that they’ll figure it out when the time comes. Let’s face it: studying for a PhD in pretty much any field of study is primarily focused on research training. You first learn the basic arguments and structuring theories of your field, spend time in seminars critiquing them, and then end up in research seminars or working with your mentors to move toward publishable research. That’s the basic path to advancement in graduate school and, presumably, through much of an academic career. The reality, though, is that the vast majority of people who seek a PhD will end up working at a college or university where teaching undergraduates is the primary focus of the faculty position.
