Abstract In this paper for the first time, performance of 400 × 40 Gbps super dense communication system has been evaluated for triple binary (TB) modulation formats (NRZ, RZ and Manchester) in terms of output power, bit error rate (BER), quality factor, receiver sensitivity and different channel spacing respectively. Further, it has observed that TB-NRZ modulation format shows the remarkable outcome in the presence of RAMAN-EDFA-RAMAN hybrid optical amplifier. But performances recorded from TB-RZ and TB-M modulation format are shown the worst response in term of power penalty for super dense system. Furthermore, it has also declared that channel spacing of 100 GHz is shown the best compatibility in terms of least variation in bandwidth. 1 Introduction The demands of higher transmission capacity for super dense wavelength division multiplexing (SD-WDM) system can only be possible using hybrid optical amplifier (HOA) with effective bandwidth cost [1–3]. Higher capacity transmission limits the performance of transmission signals in terms of optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) and fiber nonlinearity etc. All these challenges issues, motivated the researcher to enhance the performance of super dense optical communication with some special modulation techniques such as non-return-to zero (NRZ), return-to-zero (RZ), carrier suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) and differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK) [4–9] respectively. Triple binary signals using HOA are the right transmission choice to control dispersion and bandwidth for attaining best rating outcome in terms of output power and bit error rate (BER) [10, 11]. Triple binary modulator is also called phase shape modulator for supporting high spectral efficiency for SD-WDM system [12, 13].
