Abstract The experimental and simulation study of microstrip antenna with rectangular patch etched with L and inverted L slot is presented with band-notch nature for wireless frequency band operation. Designed antenna is housed in volume of 5 cm 9 5 cm 9 0.16 cm and operates between 4 and 18 GHz. The incorporating of L and inverted L slots results in split of resonating modes to exhibit the notch band property. The antenna shows the broadside nature of radiation characteristics with 3.76 dB gain at its operating frequency. The various antenna design parameters with specifications of the antennas are given and simulation, practical results are discussed in detail. The simulated, experimental results nearly match each other. Such a designed antenna may be used in SAR, X-band wireless systems applications. over the normal antenna such as low profile, compact antenna which can be efficiently used in wireless environment for its applications [1, 2]. Antennas having more than one resonant frequency band have gathered wide attention in wireless applications [3] by which it can avoid the use of multi antennas. Multiband operation of MSA’s are studied by many authors using different ways so as to improve the bandwidth of MSAs by using slot on conducting patch, defected ground plane, parasitic multi slots branches, use of fractal shape, multiresonators, stacked shorted patch, aperture coupling method, meandered ground plane [4–13], loading a stub on one radiating edge of the patch and cutting a rectangular slot offset [14], use of two slots of the new CPW [15], two linked rectangular slots in the ground plane [16], use of aperture-fed microstrip patch antenna [17], use of two symmetrically inverted U-slots [18], long rectangular patch with both sides shorted cavity model [19] etc. From the exhaustive literature review, the above mentioned methods are less efficient but of the bigger antenna size. In this paper, antenna having attained better impedance bandwidth (BW) and better gain with multiband separated by notch band characteristics is presented. The incorporated designed antenna with rectangular patch etched wi
