This comprehensive monograph covers the research, theory, policy and practice contexts in which surrogate motherhood arrangements are carried out, and how the parties involved adapt or fail to adapt to continuing changes in public opinions, advances in technologies and new legislations. All chapters explain specific aspects of surrogacy in depth using some, but by no means all, of the available research evidence. From the first few cases of surrogacy published in the media in the 1980s continuing through the millennium right up until today, the focus has been on the controversies surrounding this practice rather than the harmony it has brought to many lives. Since the popular media have been the main source of information on surrogacy in the United Kingdom, population perceptions of surrogate motherhood arrangements have not generally been favourable.
