To Daniel, who strongly advised every clinician
he befriended or talked with to put on a face for your patients, to “fake it until you make it,” if necessary, because patients are the vulnerable and despaired. He encouraged them to bend the rules when it resulted in patient dignity and mercy, to talk with peers so the right hand knows what the left hand is doing, and to know your patient’s name because—even though you have multiple charts—the patient gets only the one name, the one life.
