Abstract: Mission accomplishment within a complex subsurface operation heavily depends upon a functioning inter-actor network and a reliable, truly comprehensive Common Operational Picture. To integrate and visualize all that information necessary for this COP, a specialised element is needed—the SubSurface Operations Cell. Comprehensive by nature, this group of experts blends civil engineering, military thinking and the capability of data integration and visualization into a high-value asset in support of decision-making, providing life-saving information for the action forces operating in an extremely difficult environment. Our research group generally sticks to the term “subsurface”, which is widely used in the engineering world. OberstdG Mag. Dr. P. 1. Introduction The research group NIKE has currently been developing the Austrian Armed Forces’ capability to cope with complex scenarios in a subsurface environment. For the time being several significant achievements have already been made as the development of an operations concept [1, p. 5
