Preface

This book has not been long in the writing, but has probably been in a state of sub- or semi-conscious gestation ever since I began my postgraduate studies in 1981. Thanks to the rigorous but always supportive training provided by Nigel Palmer, these prepared me for a research career which has been punctuated by various publications about animals and their spiritual interpretation in the Middle Ages; and in recent years my thinking on the subject has been stimulated and challenged by several books which have emanated from the relatively new field of (Human-) Animal Studies. Meanwhile the question as to my own personal relationship with the natural world has become more urgent, indeed existential in recent years, thanks to my having inherited a farm in Cornwall in 2015. It is, then, only right that I should dedicate this volume to the memory of the remarkable Renaissance man and animal-lover who made this gift – as well as, of course, to the human and non-human members of my more immediate family, to whom I owe so much at all times.
