KREIDER T h e t r a n s v e r s e c r e e p and s t r e s s r u p t u r e b e h a v i o r of a n u m b e r of B o r s i c | comp o s i t e s w a s i n v e s t i g a t e d a t t e m p e r a t u r e s f r o m 200 ~ to 400~ The C o m p o s i t e s s t u d i e d c o n s i s t e d of n o m i n a l l y 50 vol p c t B o r s i c f i b e r and included m a t r i c e s of 6061, 2024, 2219, and 5052 a l u m i n u m a l l o y s . T h e e f f e c t of h e a t t r e a t m e n t w a s s t u d i e d in the h e a t - t r e a t a b l e a l l o y s . W h e r e t r a n s v e r s e c o m p o s i t e b e h a v i o r d i f f e r e d f r o m m a t r i x a l l o y b e h a v i o r , the d i f f e r e n c e w a s found to be due p r i m a r i l y to a change in f r a c t u r e mode at h i g h e r m a t r i x s t r e n g t h l e v e l s f r o m m a t r i x f a i l u r e to one which i n v o l v e s l o n g i t u d i n a l f i b e r s p l i t t i n g . Of the four b a s i c m a t r i x a l l o y s t e s t e d , the b e s t c r e e p r e s i s t a n c e w a s obtained with the 2024 m a t r i x . A d d i t i o n a l i m p r o v e m e n t of t r a n s v e r s e c r e e p and s t r e s s r u p t u r e r e s i s t a n c e w a s r e a l i z e d by i n c o r p o r a t i n g t r a n s v e r s e r e i n f o r c e m e n t s suc'h a s SAP a l l o y foil, t i t a n i u m a l l o y foil, and 0.002 in. s t a i n l e s s s t e e l w i r e in the c o m p o s i t e s . T h e s e r e i n f o r c e m e n t s m a d e p o s s i b l e good t r a n s v e r s e p r o p e r t i e s at 400~ with d e n s i t y i n c r e a s e s of -
