new and novel materials symposia. Our meetings are structured to enhance cross fertilization among the various materials disciplines. We emphasize quality in whatever we do with our limited resources. We have a first-rate publications department that provides rapid dissemination of technical information. In short, our members are involved in every aspect of MRS operations, and their good ideas are always implemented. BULLETIN: MRS has had a presence in Europe for some time and in 1988 it sponsored or cosponsored several meetings in Japan. In what context would you place this apparent expansion internationally and does MRS have specific goals in this regard? CHANG: One of MRS' many goals is to

CHANG: I like to view MRS as a "sister or brother" society of these various groups. However, these groups are all absolutely independent and selfgoverning entities. BULLETIN: journal of Materials Research is

starting its fourth volume and its production has been moved to MRS Headquarters. How would you assess the progress JMR has made toward its originally intended goals? CHANG: I believe we are on the right track. We are doing a fantastic job in achieving the original goals of JMR. But, we also have great plans for the Journal ahead!

CHANG: MRS is a member-driven society, and because of this many opportunities are made possible. We provide the best opportunity for members to organize

encourage the formation of national interdisciplinary societies in other regions of the world. We do this by supporting and encouraging various groups around the world. Good examples include: E-MRS which is now a well-established and recognized society in Europe; in China, CMRS was formed in 1986; MRS-India was formed in February 1989; and the Advanced Materials Science and Engineering Society of Japan will be formed in April 1989. We are also encouraging our colleagues elsewhere to do likewise.

Volunteer Leadership: Mainstay of MRS

BULLETIN: MRS is an Affiliated Society of the American Institute of Physics which has supported MRS in areas of exhibits, job placement and publication. How do you see the MRS-AIP relationship evolving and do you envision analogous liaisons with other technical organizations? CHANG: Yes, I believe good relations with other technical societies are mutually beneficial. MRS has benefited over the years from AIP in getting our activities off the ground, and would like to continue as an associate member of AIP in good standing. BULLETIN: Is it time to think about an "Institute of Materials?" CHANG: Several key MRS members b
