REFURBISHMENT OF STEEL BRIDGES

M.Ivanyi Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Budapest, Hungary

Abstract. This chapter studies with the refurbishrrient of steel bridges. In the first part the definition of notions in the field of the refurbishment are summarized and the developed different activities are classified. In the second part the activity fields of the surveying and diagnostic of bridges are presented, the important considerable aspects and procedures are summarized. In the third part the damages in steel bridges are presented, sketching that reasons, which basically influence the damage symptoms. The typical places of occurrence are presented: sway bracing, diaphragms, web stiffeners, components of orthotropic decks and crossing connections. We studied the main typical cause of the damages, thus:

the development of traffic, inadequate fatigue design of structural details and fabrications defects, inadmissible simplification of statical systems, mainly because the three-dimensional behaviour of bridges and secondary stresses usually neglected in design practice. We studied in this part the connection between the fatigue problems and the post-buckling behaviour of plated structures. On the bases of American and Sweden case studies the consequences of effects arising from the localised distortions of bridge elements are summarized. On the base of Japanese experiences the fatigue situations in structural elements and the proposed strengthening methods are examined. On the base of Dutch studies we deal with the effect of the shape of orthotropic steel decks on the fatigue symptoms. One of the most important questions of the last decade is also examined, mainly based on German studies, which analyses the effect of the distortion of cross-sections of bridges on the statical model. The fourth part summarizes the problems of strengthening during the relations of some typical shaping. The fifth part presents the history, the design, the construction and the refurbishment of Danube bridges. During a short summary we deal with the river Danube and the types of Danube bridges, refer to the "Catalogue of Danube Bridges" and, as an example, we summarize the history, the design, the construction and the refurbishment of the "Szabadsag" (Freedom) bridge. During the history of the bridge it could be refer to the notions defined in the first part, and to the particular appearances.

1 Definition of Notions Refurbishment of bridge is a tenn covering all the actions that to be carried out to thoroughly repair and improve a bridge (Fig. 1.1) [Ghos1, 2000]. Generally refurbishment has been considered as a beginning only when a bridge has been built and is brought into service. However, much can go wrong with a bridge as a result of actions and as decisions taken at the concept, design and construction stages.
