PREFACE This book reports the main contents of the lectures held at CISM- Udine from 2 to 6 October 2000 within the Advanced Professional Training Course entitled "Refurbishment of Buildings and Bridges". As customary of CISM policy, the main task of the course was to provide an highly developed educational programme for young engineers and architects in the field of structural rehabilitation. The preservation of cultural heritage and, hence, the refurbishment of existing works, in fact, represent today emerging activities of the modern building practice, deserving a particular attention by people involved in both design and constructional process. "Improving both knowledge and awareness of people involved in refurbishment of existing constructions is a fundamental step for a deeper exploitation of precious and invaluable resources spread all over European countries". This concept, thoroughly stressed throughout the course by all lecturers and widely shared within participants, can be considered as the main educational purpose of this activity and is constantly highlighted throughout the book. It summarises in the best way the objective of such initiative with regard to its fall out in the public domain.
