I owe a great debt to my friend Moritz Hartmann. It was in November 2011, in the early morning in a Berlin bar called Zu Dir oder Zu Mir?, that we realized that we shared a similar view on the EU’s future. That view was one based on incredulity: that the continent that we both love is run as if it were a technocratic, austerity-driven monolith. Moritz suggested we write down our ideas and publish them somewhere. I think there might even be a coaster or napkin with some ideas sketched out. Needless to say, I had forgotten most of this when I woke up the next day. As I passed by Moritz’ place the day after, however, he sat me down on the kitchen table and told me how we would transform our ideas into something else. And thus re:generation Europe was born. In its first years, the project changed shape: it was a manifesto, it was a public project, it was a research network. And then our lives took over, and the project (if not the ideas) fizzled out. Years later, as I sat down to write this short book, I realized that our ideas were still compelling to me: they resisted the changing times and offered a powerful
