Relative Risk Definition Relative Risk (RR) is a non-negative measure of association between two variables (at least one dichotomous). RR is the ratio between the risk of suffering from an adverse event when a factor is present, and the same risk evaluated when the factor is absent. Its value can be interpreted as follows: fixed equal to 1 the risk of the event when the factor is absent, RR indicates the risk when the factor is instead present. For example, relative risk = 1.8 means that the presence of the factor produces an increase of 80% in the risk with respect to its absence.
Reliability Definition Used to ascertain the ability of a given scale (e.g., the QOLPAV, MSLSS, etc.) to yield the same measurement over time. Reliability does not imply validity. There are several methods to test reliability mentioned in this chapter: Internal Consistency Reliability. A measure of reliability of selected scale items intended to measure a certain characteristic (e.g., satisfaction with one’s family), sometimes referred to as a Chronbach alpha (a). The higher the alpha, the more reliable the scale is considered, especially above 0.70. Test-Retest Reliability. The degree of agreement of a particular scale item(s) over a defined time period, typically several weeks. The higher the percentage of agreement, the more reliable the scale is considered, especially 61% (substantial reliability).
elderly. Some of the elderly are religious. Although it can be thought of as paranoid and obsessive to rely entirely on religion in all aspects of life, the resulting joy and the benevolent pursuits are bound to provide them with much benefit.
Remission Definition A point in which a chronic disease is not actively causing signs and symptoms. This may be induced by medication or surgery. As in Crohn’s disease, clinical remission is the point in which there are no signs and symptoms; endoscopic/microscopic remission is the point at which there is not active disease at the tissue level.
Remote Definition These are geographical areas within Australia that are designated as Remote based on the physical distance from the nearest urban centre and the size of that urban centre. Because the measure relies on two variables there is no one distance or size of urban centre that delineates remoteness. Regions tend to be remote when they are far from an urban centre. The larger this urban centre, the further away the region must be to be categorized as remote.
