Respiratory endoscopy is an essential tool in cases of both malignant diseases, such as lung cancer, and non-malignant diseases, such as interstitial pneumonia. In 1966, flexible bronchoscopy was developed and first introduced at the National Cancer Center, Japan, by Dr. Shigeto Ikeda. Fifty years later, the basic procedure has dramatically evolved to include a myriad of techniques for both diagnosis and treatment. In Japan, the current clinical practice of respiratory endoscopy, such as transbronchial biopsy for peripheral lung lesions, frequently employs X-ray fluoroscopy guidance.
