Over the last 30 years, we have heard about stem cells and the possibility that they may treat presently untreatable and blinding retinal and optic nerve diseases. There have been animal studies, companies perform small studies and then disappear, but nothing concrete has materialized. The FDA has repeatedly changed their regulations precluding the stability businesses require for investing. Companies must develop a proprietary product or process that allows them to recoup their investment and earn a profit. What if a proprietary product is not necessary? What if the solution is simple? How could that be brought to the market? There is much misinformation in our journals that speak about this work but know nothing about it. I began working in the stem cell field in 2009. I performed retinal stem cell surgery on two American patients in Germany in 2010, seven American patients in Austria in 2011, and, finally, in the U.S.A in 2012. I have now performed the surgery on more than 500 patients in the U.S. In this book, I provide the basis and details, the protocols, informed consents, and other information that would be helpful to a physician or researcher interested in this work.
