Risk of severe burns after emollient use The risk of severe burns in patients who have applied emollients is highlighted in a recent Drug Safety Update from the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Following application, transfer to fabric can occur. Once dried, the fabric is easily able to be ignited, which can result in severe or even fatal burns. This applies to all emollients, not just those which contain paraffin. In partnership with the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) and other organisations, the MHRA has launched an awareness campaign about the risk of fire. Various resources are freely available for download, which can be used to inform patients and caregivers and to encourage dialogue with colleagues. Any suspected adverse reactions or incidents should be reported. Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. Emollients and risk of severe and fatal burns: new resources available.
