Cryptococcal meningitis in an elderly patient: case report A 70-year-old man developed cryptococcal meningitis following rituximab administration. The man, who had a 11-year history of rheumatoid arthritis, was admitted with a 1-month history of confusion, weight loss, reduced appetite, difficulty weight bearing and reduced mobility. He was currently receiving methotrexate and prednisolone. Additionally, he had received infliximab for 8 years, with his last dose being administered 7 months prior to admission, and rituximab [route and dosage not stated], which he received 4 months prior to admission. After 2 weeks of hospitalisation, he developed dysarthria, bilateral VIIth nerve palsy, globally reduced power and worsening of his visual acuity. Cryptococcal antigen tests were found to be positive. The man received ambisome and flucytosine. He subsequently made a full recovery and was discharged. Jani M, et al.
