Rivastigmine Multiple gastric ulcers: case report

An 89-year-old woman developed multiple gastric ulcers during treatment with rivastigmine for Alzheimer’s disease. The woman, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, started receiving rivastigmine [dosage and route not stated]. Her medical history was significant for arterial hypertension. She presented to hospital due to post-prandial vomiting, asthenia, hyporexia and weight loss. Subsequently, she was hospitalised. A gastroscopy test revealed extensive ulceration and swelling affecting the lesser gastric curvature and incisura with extension towards the antrum. Eventually, she was diagnosed with multiple gastric ulcers [time to reaction onset not stated]. It was suspected that the multiple gastric ulcers might be secondary to rivastigmine. Therefore, the woman’s treatment with rivastigmine was discontinued. Two weeks later, she presented with no symptoms and weight recovery. She remained asymptomatic thereafter. Lopez Lopez S, et al.
