ABSTRACT A roast experiment was carried out by using vanadium stone coal from Hubei Province as object, in the condition of compound additive dosage is 6%, the effects of roasting temperature, roasting time and material size on vanadium lixiviate efficiency were investigated. Experimental results indicate that, for the vanadium stone coal from Hubei Province, at the condition of additive dosage is 6%, the ideal target of vanadium lixiviate efficiency 82.3% can be acquired in the optimum condition of roasting temperature at 850 oC, roasting time is 120 minutes, material size is minus 0.5mm. INTRODUCTION Stone coal is an important vanadium resource. It is widely distributed in many provinces of China such as Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Zhejiang, Anhui and Jiangxi. In China, total stone coal reserves 61.8 billion tons and 118 million tons of V2O5. This amount is more than 87% of the domestic reserve of vanadium [1]. The stone coal mainly consist of quartz, carbonaceous material, illite, muscovite, pyrite, calcite, and other small amounts minerals. In general, most of vanadium in stone coal is scattered in mica minerals and carbonaceous material as isomorphism and sorption state [2]. Previous studies [3-5] have shown that vanadium might have three valence state in the stone coal. V3+ substitutes for Al3+ in the octahedron crystal lattice of mica minerals. V5+ existing as free oxides or vanadate salts. V4+ might exist in both forms of isomorphism or absorption. To extract vanadium from stone coal, roast and lixiviate process are necessary. In China, the study of extracting vanadium from stone coal began at 1960s. Several typical processes have been proposed in the past decades, such as sodium roasting-water lixiviating or low acidity lixiviating [4,5], composite sodium roasting-water lixiviating [6,7], calcium salt roasting-acidity lixiviating [8], and direct acid lixiviating [9]. The production practice indicated that the vanadium lixiviate efficiency of stone coal is tied up with roast conditions. However, for the complex ingredient and structure of stone coal, it is not the higher temperature, the higher vanadium lixiviate efficiency. So roast experiment research of vanadium stone coal is an important content in the extract of vanadium stone coal. EXPERIMENT Materials The stone coal used in the present work was acquired from Hubei province, China. Quantitative XRD and chemical analysis was used to determine the mineralogy of the stone coal.

The XRD pattern of stone coal raw ore is shown in Figure 1. The chemical analysis results are shown in Table I.
