■ Hoffmann-La Roche Limited (Roche) is alerting healthcare professionals to rare cases of necrotising fasciitis in patients treated with Avastin [bevacizumab]. Necrotising fasciitis is a severe, lifethreatening bacterial infection of the skin and soft tissue. Symptoms can develop as early as 24 hours after a minor skin injury or surgical wound. Some of the reported cases have resulted in death from complications of necrotising fasciitis. Roche advises that, if necrotising fasciitis occurs, administration of Avastin should be discontinued. Symptoms may include sudden, severe pain in the affected area, fever, redness, heat, swelling, scaling, peeling or fluid-filled blisters in the skin, discoloured skin, confusion, fainting or dizziness.
