In this book, the authors address popular accusations that Russia misuses energy supplies to help achieve its foreign policy goals. To determine whether these accusations are well grounded, the authors constructed a specific research model that was then applied to the states of South-Eastern Europe, an area believed to be a principal Russian focus. The book concentrates on the oil sector, which, due to its complexity, may be seen as a breeding ground for politically influenced deals and backroom negotiations. The book offers 11 thorough case studies that examine the oil sectors of individual countries in South-Eastern Europe with regard to the activities of Russian companies and representatives. As a result, the book unearths the key patterns of conduct by Russian companies and the role played by the Russian state. In doing so, it answers the question of whether the Russian state employs energy supplies as a foreign policy tool.
