FOREWORD From January 19 to January 30, 1981, the University

of Zagreb

sponsored a Winter school and Conference on Shape Theory and Geometric !opology at the Inter-University Centre of postgraduate studies, Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia. held there.

This was the second such school and conference

The first was held from January 12 to January 30, 1976

under the title Shape Theory and Pro-homotopy. The Winter school consisted of a series of lectures devoted to the interaction of shape theory with various areas of geometric topology and also involved the participation of the graduate students. particular, the aim was to cover the following topics:

In

homotopy and

shape domination, pointed and unpointed shape, improving shape representations, dimension and shape dimension, cell-like mappings and hereditary shape equivalences, approximate fibrations and shape fibrations, complement theorems and embeddings up to shape, strong shape. The contributed papers have been divided into four areas to form the chapters of this volume.

These are:

Shape and homotopy domination Geometric topology and dimension theory Complement theorems and embeddings up to shape Shape and strong shape.

Steenrod homology

In each area the articles appear in alphabetical order by author. The addresses of all p
