Educational institutions these days are dominated by texts, and yet, even though reading and writing seem such quiet activities, they are still such noisy places. Eva Alerby has been working for many years to tease out the value of silence, the contribution of silence to educational endeavours and the danger of seeing silence as merely a form of control and oppression. This fine book brings together her thoughts on what silence is, how it is used and why it should be appreciated. Finding the opportunities for silence is an important task for schools. Extended ‘silent reading’ is not as popular as it once was, and yet ‘silent discos’ have recently been introduced to festivals and clubs, where people wear headphones to listen to music, and dance together. Such silent discos are only silent to observers: they are filled with music for each participant.
