Because of this trend, new texts covering these ideas have been proliferating. The book Sleep Science (Oxford University Press), edited by Hawley Montgomery-Downs [1], invites readers by eloquently and succinctly laying out the fundamental principles in this field. Throughout the book, concepts are laid out with clarity and simplicity to accommodate both beginners and experts. The book employs the use of clear, detailed examples combined with vivid, informative figures to illustrate these fundamental concepts to the reader. Sleep Science is divided into four distinct parts. It begins with a quick-paced, crash course in the physiology and science behind sleep. First, the authors discuss the important relationship between sleep and consciousness. In this way, the complicated question of “What is sleep?” is answered. In answering this question, the basics of sleep staging as well as early sleep theories are discussed to give light to where the understanding of sleep is today. Chapter 1 covers the basics of sleep and the history of the field of sleep research. The second chapter of the book continues with a discussion of sleep across the animal kingdom. Chapter 3 addresses the basics of sleep physiology and neurophysiology. Chapter 4 introduces circadian rhythms and circadian physiology. Chapter 5 discusses cultural and other issues around sleep in infancy. Chapter 6 covers the history of dreaming. The

last chapter in this section, Chapter 7, covers the issues of cognition and memory as they relate to sleep. The second part illustrates a lifetime of sleep. Chapter 8 begins with neural development and infancy, this chapter highlights the changes that occur throughout development. Chapter 9 continues with Child Development, and Chapter 10 progresses to adolescence and emerging adulthood. Chapter 11 focuses on adulthood, and Chapter 12 focuses on issues related to aging. Chapter 13 is a unique and important chapter in this section, which delves into the relationship between women’s health and its implications for sleep health. This chapter highlights the sleep disturbances and alterations that occur in a woman’s lifetime such as during the physiological changes of menstruation and menopause.
