This book approaches preschool children’s social-emotional development from both a theoretical and an applied perspective. It is intended to offer a step-by-step description of the process involved in translating theoretical knowledge about children’s social-emotional competencies into an effective intervention tool for school-based interventions. Such an undertaking is important due to several reasons. First, in spite of numerous research outcomes supporting the relevance of children’s social-emotional competencies for their mental health and school adjustment, interventions aiming to develop social-emotional skills are not yet part of systematic school-based prevention efforts. Second, a relatively large proportion of preventive interventions in schools are not developed by considering scientific evidence, nor do they rely on systematic assessment of their outcomes.
