On a daily basis, students of color are suspended and expelled from school at a disproportionately higher level than white students. Students who speak a language other than English are placed in learning disabled classes while classroom textbooks reflect the deeply rooted historical inequities in our society. Recently, the news reported on a school where a high school chemistry teacher asked students to pay $20.00 to take the class. One student’s parents could not afford the fee, so the teacher wrote that student’s name on the board until she could pay. Every student who passed through that classroom would know why her name was on the board. Here, the students could be penalized for being poor. Across the country, educators implement rules and regulations that elevate finances over learning and restrict students’ right to an equal education if they cannot afford a particular class or activity, as is the case in many states.
