A statistical workshop: the Essence of Statistics in Clinical Trials This training is for anyone who would like to better understand basic statistical information for designing and analysing clinical trials Course Trainers: Dr Kerry Gordon & Rachel Moate with a special guest speaker from MHRA

Topics expected to be covered include: motivation, need for statistics; populations and samples; uncertainty and variability; distributions; types of data; summarising data (mean, median, standard deviation, standard errors, proportions); hypothesis testing; type 1 and 2 error; p-values; confidence intervals; superiority, non-inferiority; sample size determination (power, delta); avoiding bias – randomization and blinding; populations – safety, ITT, PP; basic statistical methods: T-test, chi-square test; covariates and subgroups; comparing treatments (differences in means, odds ratios, relative risk, absolute risk difference etc); More sophisticated statistical methods (ANCOVA, logistic regression)
