This book has long been in the making. The germ of this idea surfaced in 1998 in the course of our co-teaching an undergraduate module on classical sociological theory, Social Thought and Social Theory, at the Department of Sociology at the National University of Singapore. For many years since then this teaching opportunity provided the testing ground for the ideas and content reflected in the book that has materialized. During the many semesters that we co-taught this course we appreciated and learnt a great deal from the many conversations, disagreements and debates we had had about rethinking social theory and its teaching.
