T h i s p a p e r is a r e p o r t on the diffusion r a t e s of c h r o m i u m , v a n a d i u m , and h a f nium in c~- and v - F e . T h e study was p a r t of a l a r g e r p r o g r a m , involving the i n v e s t i g a t i o n of diffusion in b c c i r o n al l o y s . ~ In o r d e r to study diffusion in a - F e o v e r as l a r g e a t e m p e r a t u r e r a n g e a s p o s s i b l e , r e s u l t s w e r e a l s o obtained on an a l l o y , F e - 2 pct V; L a i and B o r g 2 have a l r e a d y shown that t h e r e is no s y s t e m a t i c d i f f e r e n c e b e t w e e n diffusion in pure i r o n and in an al loy of s i m i l a r c o m p o s i t i o n to the one u s e d in the p r e s e n t i n v e s t i g a t i o n . T h e r e f o r e , the r e s u l t s for i m p u r i t y diffusion in F e - 2 pct V should be s y n o n y m o u s with diffusion in pure a - F e , within e x p e r i m e n t a l e r r o r . Most measurements were made using tracer techn i q u e s ; additional m e a s u r e m e n t s u s e d the e l e c t r o n p r o b e m i c r o a n a l y z e r for c h r o m i u m diffusion.

Th e i s o t o p e s w e r e s u p p l i e d by U n i t e d Kingdom A t o m i c E n e r g y A u t h o r i t y , A m e r s h a m . C r 51 was supplied as s o d i u m c h r o m a t e ; V 4s and Hf 1B1 a s the c h l o r i d e in HC1. All s o l u t i o n s w e r e c a r r i e r f r e e .
