# 2020 The Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract

Abstract The microbiome plays a major role in human physiology by influencing obesity, inducing inflammation, and impacting cancer therapies. During the 60th Annual Meeting of the Society of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT) at the State-of-the-Art Conference, experts in field discussed the influence of the microbiome in their field. This paper is a summary of the influence of the microbiome on obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatic cancer, cancer therapies, and gastrointestinal optimization. This review shows how the microbiome plays an important role in the development of diseases and surgical complications. Future studies are needed in targeting the gut microbiome to develop individualized therapies. Keywords Microbiome . Obesity . Pancreatic cancer . Inflammatory bowel disease . Gastrointestinal optimization

Introduction The microbiome plays a major role in human physiology by 1 2 influencing obesity, inducing inflammation and impacting 3 cancer therapies. Understanding how the microbiome works and how to optimize therapies is key to advancing treatment for common diseases and surgical complications. During the 60th Annual Meeting of the Society of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), a State-of-the-Art Conference was held on advance-

ments in the microbiome. There were five major topics presented by the following: (1) Purna C. Kashyap: The role of the microbiome in obesity, (2) Ryan M. Thomas: The microbial influences on cancer therapy, (3) Richard A. Hodin: The role of the microbiome in inflammatory bowel disease, (4) George Miller: The role of the microbiome in pancreatic cancer, and (5) Benjamin D. Shogan: Gastrointestinal and colorectal optimization. This review includes summaries from the presenting speakers on each of the five topics.

This review consists of summaries from speakers that presented at the State-of-the-Art Conference during the 60th Annual Meeting of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), San Diego, May 2019. * Miquell O. Miller [email protected] 1
