Standard Gamble Definition Standard Gamble is a method of calculating utility values for health states in which participants are asked what percentage risk of death, if any, they would take in order to have the chance of a return to normal health.

Standard Measures Definition Standard Measures ask the same questions of all respondents.

Standard Population Synonyms Referent population Definition Standard Population is used for age and sex adjustments of overall rates to make possible comparisons between countries and over time. Although any population can be used as a standard, the most frequently used referent population for global comparison has been the ‘‘world’’ population based on the pooled populations of 46 countries.

Standardized Rates Synonyms Age-Adjusted or Age and Sex Adjusted rates Definition Standardized Rates are fictive values showing what would be the overall rate in the study population if it had the same age and sex distribution as the population taken as the standard. They are used to make possible comparisons of overall rates among populations or within the same population over time. For example, since mortality increases with ageing, in two populations with exactly the same age specific rates, the crude overall mortality rate will be greater in the older population, but the agestandardized overall rate will show that two compared populations do not differ in their risk of dying.

Standardized Values Definition When the values of a variable is transformed by subtracting the mean of the variable from each of the observations and then dividing the difference by the standard deviation of the variable.

Standardized Mortality Ratio Definition This is defined as the ratio of the number of deaths observed in a specific population, to the number of deaths that would have been expected in that population had the population had the same mortality experience as some standard population which is comparable to the population being studied in all crucial respects other than having had the exposure in question.

Stanford Health Assessment Questionnaire Definition The Health Assessment Questionnaire has established itself as a valuable, effective, and sensitive tool in the measurement of health status in osteoarthrosis and rheumatoid arthritis patients. This questionnaire was used to assess fibromyalgia in 1980s.
