To mark the anniversary, we present this volume of papers dedicated to his memory. The contributors include collaborators, colleagues, and other members of the statistical community influenced by him. Many of the papers grew out of a conference in his honor, held in Rochester in June 2009. Here is a summary sketch of his life and achievements, drawn extensively from his obituary in the IMS Bulletin.1 A full list of publications is included in this volume as an Appendix.
