Abstract Mattress is very closely related to people’s life. The ergonomics design is very important to the comfort of mattress which directly influences the health, sleep quality and rest efficiency. A large number of studies show that the ergonomic design of the mattress has a direct relationship with human body dimensions, such as height, weight, spine curvature and so on. And human spine curvature is an important influence factor for the ergonomic design of mattress. This study aims at establishing the ergonomic design index of mattress and obtains the human body dimensions used for ergonomic design of mattress. Based on the collected human body data, the contrastive analysis on the spine curvature of different groups of people was conducted. It was found that there were obvious differences in the spine curvature between different groups of people. This experiment result has important reference significance on the ergonomic design of mattress. H. Hu (&) C. Zhao L. Luo F. Zhang H. 1 Introduction As we all know, nearly 1/3 of people’s life is spent in sleep, as the main bedding used by people, whether the mattress is comfortable or not is very important for the health, sleep quality and rest efficiency. There are a lot of factors such as the material, hardness, breathability and so on that influences the comfort of mattress. There have been many researches by related experts about the relationship between the various indexes of mattress and the sleep quality for a long time. In 1930, Laird and Miller did the research about the relationship between sleep condition and the type of mattress, and found that the both have close relationship [1]. In 1997, by comparing the mattress with different material, Mc Dannold M, Kaye H and Berkowitz DV found that the hardness of mattress affect sleep quality very much [2]. In 2001, Park analyzed the comfort of mattress by spine shape and body pressure distribution and subjective evaluation, the results showed that the spine shape and pressure distribution of interface between body and bed have a great influence on the comfort of mattress, far greater than the impact of other materials [3]. With the gradual improvement of the
