Foreword

The contributions of science and technology are essential to sound clinical practice, as they enable a clear assessment of the clinical manifestations of disease and, in turn, form the basis for the appropriate medical or surgical treatment. There are two major parts to this volume. In the first, the relationship between cancer biology and surgery and the challenges posed by the one on the other are discussed. In the second, the contributions of biochemistry, physiology, pathology, imaging, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery to the diagnosis and management of solid tumors are considered. The information is addressed not only to experienced surgeons but also to those entering or still in training. I wish to thank the distinguished specialists who have contributed to this book.
