Foreword to the German Edition

Surgeons and clinicians of the head and neck have long recognized the need for a properly developed anatomic text and illustrations for swift and accurate orientation. There are of course a number of excellent anatomical atlases and texts available, but rapid orientation - as for example in defining intraoperative structures - is often made difficult by the detailed minutia of the anatomical text. The result is that such texts often fail to meet clinical demands. The principal author of this book is indeed fortunate to have had a clinical and surgical education at an outstanding ENT institution in Sercer, in addition to her anatomical training and teaching experience. This has enabled her to design the illustrations with the problems of the surgeon in mind, with better information on the special features of approaches to deeper, more vital structures. Her two coauthors are both well-known surgeons in their own rights, and have been able to offer additional assistance and advice. The text has been deliberately kept brief to render orientation swift and to ensure general clarity. Nevertheless, all clinical
