Foreword
After two-plus decades working to advance sustainable development, I have come to the conclusion that there are only a few sustainability challenges that really matter. This book focuses on one of them: How to transform the energy sector into suppliers of clean, dependable, affordable energy services? Sustainable Electricity tackles the thorny issues of what sustainability means in practice, how to reconcile demands from competing stakeholders—consumers, investors, regulators, environmentalists, and others—and how to turn sustainability into a business opportunity. I’ve spent most of my career developing tools to help corporate leaders make decisions that are good for people and the planet, and good for their bottom line. Over a decade ago, my colleagues at WRI and I published Green Ledgers, providing practical examples of companies using environmental cost information to improve profitability and reduce environmental risk. We followed Green Ledgers with Measuring Up, which defined a set of corporate environmental performance metrics that were later incorporated into the Global Reporting Initiative framework.
