I have always enjoyed puzzles, particularly those with fuzzy rules that encourage creative and tangential thinking. For much of my life, I have pursued the solution of one puzzle: I’ve been trying to identify and fit together the pieces of a jigsaw that would give me a general understanding of how humans, organizations, and societies work. This is a wicked jigsaw because there are no edge pieces to frame the puzzle and the pieces rarely fit together cleanly. Even so, there are moments of elation when I see a connection between two pieces and can mash them together within my mind. Sometimes I see how a series of pieces connect to create a landscape that is a significant leap forward for me in solving my idiosyncratic jigsaw. This book is about four of these landscape moments.
