■ Tacrolimus is associated with an increase in the incidence of new diabetes mellitus after organ transplantation, but results in a similar long-term outcome to ciclosporin A, say researchers from Austria.* They retrospectively compared outcomes among patients who received mycophenolate mofetil or azathioprine, in combination with either tacrolimus (n = 60) or ciclosporin A (206). After transplantation, diabetes developed among 92% of patients in the tacrolimus group and 14% in the ciclosporin A group (p < 0.0001). Long-term survival was similar for all patients, and there were no significant between-group differences observed in the development of graftvasculopathy, or in levels of serum creatinine, triglycerides or cholesterol. * their research was presented at the 30th Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Seebacher G, et al. New Development of Diabetes in Tacrolimus Treated Patients.
