Retinal toxicity: case report A 57-year-old man developed retinal toxicity during treatment with tadalafil. After using tadalafil 10mg twice daily [route and indication not stated] for about a month, the patient developed visual disturbances. He presented with positive scotoma and flashing lights in his right eye. He had a normal left eye fundus examination. His right eye fundus examination showed a normal macula and optic disc with mild retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) changes. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) of his right eye showed a hyperreflective dense area at the same location as the RPE changes and the appearance of a serous retinal detachment (SRD). Tadalafil was withdrawn, and the patient was examined 2 months later. Disappearance of the pseudo-SRD and dense area was seen upon SD-OCT. The associated symptoms resolved quickly after tadalafil withdrawal. Author comment: "Tadalafil use may be associated with reversible damage to the photoreceptors and corresponding visual symptoms. . . Our observations are consistent with tadalafil-associated retinal toxicity characterized by damage to the photoreceptors’ outer segment in the parafoveal area of right eye." Coscas F, et al.
