Abstract In this research work, copper disulphide ( Cu2S) and molybdenum disulphide ( MoS2) nanomaterials has been synthesized for the photocatalytic degradation of phenol. Hybrid Cu2S/MoS2 was prepared by pure Cu2S with the MoS2 precursor ammonium molybdate dehydrated ( NH4)2MoO4 using hydrothermal method. To check the morphology, functional grouping, band gap and optical properties of the synthesized materials SEM, FTIR, UV–Vis and PL spectroscopy were used. The SEM characterization shows that the nanoparticles are nano flat sheets of C u2S and M oS2. The presence of M oS2 shows nanoflower structure and grain size particles changed into nano flat sheets structure. The UV–Vis spectroscopy shows that band gap of synthesized samples changes from 1.62 to 1.30 eV by varying the different concentration ratio of MoS2 while the functional groups of prepared samples studied by FTIR spectra. The PL- spectroscopy illustrates that the maximum wavelength of excitation is 430 nm. Photocatalytic results show highest degradation rate of phenol by 1% M oS2 doped to C u2S composite. The photocatalytic activity of this experiment under the absorption of visible light is used to calculate the concentrations of phenol degradation as-prepared samples. The improved photocatalytic activity as well as enhanced electrical and conductive properties of Cu2S/MoS2 nanomaterials has been presented. Among the different concentration of Cu2S–MoS2 nanocomposite, these materials show the exceptional photocatalytic enhancement and cyclic consistency. 1 Introduction Water pollution is currently a main environmental problem around the globe. As the population is soaring day by day, the public demands are also surging which indirectly raising the environmental pollution in the world. Pure water is a basic need of the people and it is the essential part for the proper functioning of the environment [1]. There are * M. Bilal Tahir [email protected]; [email protected] 1
