The Assessment Phase of the Intervention Research Framework: The Measurement Instrument and Data Collection
Abstract Chapter eleven is the final of four chapters providing details about the Assessment phase of the Intervention Research Framework. This chapter focuses on developing a measurement instrument, and discusses issue associated with data collection. The first section of this chapter considers the dimensions of a study instrument and how work in the Formative phase of the Intervention Research Framework provides guidance for study instrument dimensions and items. Methods for assessing the parametric qualities of the study instrument are detailed. Issues of anonymity, confidentiality are also discussed. The second section of this chapter provides an overview of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods of data collection. Attention is also given to developing a data collection protocol and data collection management plan, as well as recruiting, training and measuring the impact of data collectors. Finally details of the reliability assessment of the SHAHRP study instrument are provided. Objectives: By the end of this chapter readers will be able to: • • • • •
Identify components of research instrument development Define validity and reliability of research instruments Describe methods to assess the parametric qualities of a research instrument Identify the benefits of undertaking parametric testing of research instruments Describe different methods for linking data and how different forms of consent can impact on the research study • Identify differences between qualitative and quantitative research and data collection • Identify components of a data collection protocol • Describe components of a data management plan

The Assessment Phase …
Dimensions of a Study Measurement Instrument When measuring change in a longitudinal study as part of the Assessment phase of the Intervention Research Framework, a researcher may choose to use an existing measurement instrument, combine several existing instrument, or develop a measurement instrument unique to their study. If existing measurement instruments provide scope to measure all domains that the research team wants to explore, then the parametric qualities of the existing tools should be reviewed. If the parametric assessments are adequate, this measurement instrument can be used without any further development costs or time. When using an existing measurement instrument, the researcher should note its source, dimensions, and the parametric findings of the instrument in the study design manual and in any subsequent study publications. Using one or more existing measurement instruments is generally the preferred option as a considerable amount of effort and time is required to develop and assess the validity and reliability of a newly developed instrument.
