The contours of the Public Health Status and Foresight Report 2018 The last edition of the Public Health Status and Foresight Report, the PHSF-2014 is almost two years old. A perfect time to look at the next one, which will be released in 2018. Every four years, a new edition of the PHSF provides input for health policy. First for national policy as designed by the Health Ministry, but also for municipalities, health care providers and other players in the field of health and care. Maaike de Vries, RIVM project leader of the new PHSF: "The PHSF2018 wants to tell stories about the future of public health which policymakers can not ignore and do not want to ignore." She focuses on the central government, local authorities, health authorities, patient organizations, health care providers, insurers, scientists, students, and interested citizens. Next to the classic themes, the PHSF2018 dedicates extra attention to health care and to education, employment, environment, security and technology and their impact on population health in the coming decades. In this Spectrum, people from the public health federation, municipal health services, health care, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, and from the perspective of science, comment on the outlines of the new PHSF. The themes chosen by the PSSF-2018 – future health care needs, technology, and public health of the future, are precisely the themes that assist the

Dutch Public Health Federation (NPHF) in working on their vision of changing the way we think about a sustainable healthcare system. For the municipal health services, the regional component is important in exploring the future demands of health care. The new and much broader definition of positive health must be the starting point. Care is important for health, but rarely a determining factor for quality of life. However, the way care is part of the daily lives of people who need intensive care, can improve significantly. The VTV2018 can give answers to questions about the optimal organization of care, answers that also can be understood and applied by caregivers and people who need care. For policy on education, culture and science (OCW), as for public health and care policy, everything is in motion. There are new networks, we operate more than ever in chains, with all kinds of interfaces between sectors. New ideas arise at places where different disciplines or sectors meet. Results of foresight studies provide tools for policy makers, making reliability essential. For science, foresights that do not come true are the most valuable. Are the assumptions sustainable, does the model fit? The new PHSF2018 themes also deal with conceptual questions. Enough challenges for the PHSF2018! Keywords: public health, foresight, wider determinants of health, PHSF
