Preface

This book introduces students to a wide range of techniques from mainstream economics and health economics that can be applied to the evaluation of public health policy and public health issues. To aid understanding and help students apply theory in practice, the book includes a large number of empirical examples. These are from developed countries and will show the reader how economic tools can be applied to public health. Where applicable, cross-country comparisons are used to illustrate how contextual factors related to health care systems, demographics, and environmental factors may impact on outcomes and the cost-effectiveness of public health policies. This book is divided into three main sections. It begins with an introduction to public health economics and indicates how economics can contribute to the development of public health policy. The second section outlines how observational data can be used for policy evaluation and discusses potential datasets that can be used for analysis. The final section outlines different estimation techniques and their strengths and weaknesses, providing examples of when they are appropriate.
