■ The Danish Medicines Agency has issued a report on the risk of thrombosis in oral contraceptive users recommending that second generation pills (containing norgestrel, levonorgestrel or norgestimate) be prescribed where possible. A review of the literature and analysis of data on oral contraceptive use and adverse events reports in Denmark found that the overall risk of thrombosis in oral contraceptive users is low, with first and second generation pills having the lowest risk, and that summaries of product characteristics and package leaflets included the most recent safety information. Third generation oral contraceptives (containing desogestrel or gestodene) are most frequently used by Danish women, and are most likely to be prescribed to first-time users. Danish Medicines Agency.
