The motivation of this book comes from our lecture series “What is Design?” and reflects the research carried out within the first phase of the Competence Center for Digital Design and Modeling. In one of our steering committee meetings, I proposed to the committee to bring out a book about the different understandings of design. At the same time that we were thinking about bringing out a book and reflecting about a publisher, Mr. Engesser from Springer Verlag contacted Michael Hampe, asking if he would be interested in writing a book. This is how it happened that we met Mr. Engesser in Zurich and told him about our idea. The project began with this pleasant coincidence. So we started to verify our ideas and what we really wanted to present in our book. This book would not have been possible without all the work and effort the authors have put into their contributions. This project was accompanied by very good collaboration, discussions and inputs. Our special thanks go to Debbie Bregenzer for not only proof reading all articles, but also for the valuable comments and questions she had. We are very thankful to our publisher, Springer, for accepting our proposal and to everybody involved in bringing this book to life. Special thanks go to Dorothea Glaunsinger and Gabriele Fischer for all their patient understanding and support of the pr
