The author of this book studied economics in India in the 1980s, when the standard curriculum was loaded with something called Indian Economics, had a decent quantity of European economic history, and barely recognized the existence of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. In this age of globalization, economics teaching in South Asia may be less resolutely nationalistic than it was then, but the absence of good narrative histories of South Asia shows an enduring lack of readership for such works within the region. A book such as this one may help the student of economics see that we can understand every country in the region a little better if we compare it with the others.
