The d i m e n s i o n s of the s k e t c h e d s p e c i m e n s , then, a r e no m o r e than a few m i c r o n s each. In a l l of the s k e t c h e s and f r a c t o g r a p h s in this p a p e r , the c r a c k is g r o w i n g f r o m left to r i g h t . The t h i r d c o l umn in F i g . 1 is of p r i m a r y i n t e r e s t . T h i s shows the in situ m a t i n g s h a p e s of the d i m p l e s b e f o r e the s u r f a c e s a r e o p e n e d up. The d i r e c t i o n of v i e w i n g for t h e s e d i m p l e s is f r o m the top of the s p e c i m e n s shown in the s e c o n d column.
