Preface

Isaac Newton is considered one of the fathers of modern science for establishing the methods of calculus that helped explain the motion of objects on Earth as well as the planets in the solar system. His Third Law of Motion states “To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Energy and economic discourse seems to follow the same rule: for every narrative, there is an equal and opposite counter-narrative. Without energy consumption, nothing moves, gets extracted or manufactured, or stays alive. In other words, without energy consumption, there is no economic activity. Because affordable energy has been so abundant for the last 100 years, most citizens might never contemplate these points. But these points are constantly on the minds of those in the energy industry, environmental organizations, and high-level political and military positions. Nevertheless, people within these groups often disagree and promote dichotomous visions for our future energy supply using one of the two narratives: fossil fuels versus renewable energy.
