In September 2007 I set up home in a new city—Madrid—and became, for a brief ten months, an international student. My experience was no doubt very different from the students who took part in this research. There was little jeopardy in terms of my likely final degree qualification, and I saw Erasmus primarily as a chance to experience somewhere different and, like many of the students I spoke to, as an opportunity for personal development. What I did not realise, however, was that this experience would pave the way for the following ten years as I have sought to analyse and make greater sense of the international student experience. I would therefore like to thank all of the wonderful people that I met over the academic year that I spent in Spain, and who were foundational in terms of the work that I have carried out subsequently, in particular Julie Bedochaud and Liz Shapiro, as well as Ana Olivera who taught me a real appreciation of Spanish geography.
