This book honors “the presence of absence,” the almost daily inspiration of those I have lost: my mother, Marjorie Tomlinson Fraker; my daughter, Alison Gwen Fraker; my sister, Wenda Warren Fraker; and my brother, Howard Hopkins Fraker. It is also dedicated to the presence of those who sustain me: my extended family—sons, daughter, brothers, nephews and nieces and grandchildren, but most especially my wife, Molly, for enabling me to lead my singular and privileged existence. Finally, to my ninety-five-year-old father, who at his age wants to know why it has taken so long.
